How does Chiropractic work?

Chiropractic is based on the fact that you are an organism controlled solely by your nervous system. Information messages from your brain travels down the spinal cord and through your spinal nerves controlling every organ in your body. Messages are also sent back to the brain confirming that your body is functioning properly.

Improper motion and malposition of your spine can interfere with these messages by irritating nerves and compromising the function of related organs and tissues.

This malposition of the spinal bones is called a subluxation. Specific spinal adjustments can help improve the function of your nervous system, as well as all of your organs and tissues.

What are Subluxations?Subluxations

Subluxations are areas of the spine that affect your entire nervous system. In these areas, the spinal bones are misaligned or have lost their normal range of movement. this will irritate and put pressure on local nerves, interfering with the communication between your brain and body.

Symptoms such as headaches, back pain, neck stiffness, pain in your shoulders, arms or legs, numbness in your hands or feet or nervousness are the most common signs of subluxations. But like a tooth cavity most people will have a subluxation long before they notice any symptoms.

How do I know if I have a Subluxation?
You can have subluxations and not even know it. Similar to tooth decay, a subluxation can be present before warning signs appear. A thorough examination will be able to determine the location and severity of the subluxation.

What makes the sound during an adjustment?
Fluids separate the bones of each spinal joint. Some adjustments can produce a sound when the gas and the fluids in the joint shift. It is similar to the removal of a suction cup from a hard surface. The sound does not always occur and is not a guide to the quality or value of the adjustment.

Can I adjust myself?
No. Some people can make their joints "pop", but it is not an adjustment. Damage can occur by mobilizing a joint yourself. Adjustments are specific and take years of training to master.

How many adjustments will I need?
The number of adjustments can vary with each patient and their individual case. Many patients will see results within weeks of frequent visits. The frequency of adjustments will decrease as your spine stabilizes.

Do I have to keep coming back?
You may have heard from a friend or a family member, that once you see a chiropractor you have to keep going. As a patient at the Campbell Chiropractic Health Centre you will be encouraged to continue to make chiropractic a life time commitment, but the choice is always yours.

Once we have dealt with and eliminated your pain, we do recommend a maintenance schedule of spinal check ups. Similar to tooth decay and periodic check ups with your dentist. Spinal check ups are essential in minimizing new injuries and optimizing your health.

So yes, we do want you to keep coming back periodically. For the benefit of your body and health, but ultimately it is always your choice.

Is physiotherapy or chiropractic better for spinal problems
They are both important for different reasons.

Physiotherapy focuses on strengthening and stabilizing muscles surrounding the injured area.

Chiropractic ensures proper spinal alignment so that essential nerves are not irritated or pinched. If these nerves are pinched, the associated muscles will tighten and cause discomfort.

It makes sense to first ensure proper alignment of the spine with chiropractic care. Without proper alignment, muscles stabilization will only be temporary, at best as misalignment will continue to aggravate surrounding muscles. However, once misalignments have been corrected muscle stabilization and strengthening are beneficial in maintaining proper alignment.
